About Minnesota Valley State Recreation Area

Minnesota Valley State Recreation Area is a protected landscape along the Minnesota River that spans more than 5,000 acres across several units in the metropolitan area near Minneapolis and St. Paul. The park preserves significant stretches of river bluffs, floodplain forests, wetlands, and tallgrass prairie remnants. The geology is marked by steep limestone and sandstone cliffs sculpted through glacial river action, providing dramatic views and rich habitats for diverse wildlife. The area supports species such as white-tailed deer, bald eagles, and several migratory birds, making it a prime location for nature observation. Historically, this area was inhabited and used by Dakota people, and later supported river transportation and milling industries. Today, it serves as a natural refuge and outdoor recreation hub accessible to urban populations. Visitors enjoy hiking and mountain biking on an extensive trail network, fishing and canoeing on the river, and exploring historic sites such as the Ney Nature Center. The park’s proximity to the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area makes it a valuable green space for education, quiet nature enjoyment, and seasonal outdoor activities.
